Post 1 Open House
Notes from Post 1’s Oct 21 Open House
Highlights: We are grateful to have had 15 attendees, both members and non-members! We hosted Cindy Yanchury and Wayne Beierman, both from the Department Training Committee. Cindy also serves as the Department Chaplain and was kind enough to say an opening prayer for us. Cari and Jodee from Auxiliary Unit 1 talked about their Halloween Candy Drive for the VA Medical Center, and Wayne and Cindy discussed Robert’s Rules of Order. We had 1 new member join the ranks, and 1st Vice Commander and Membership Director Chris Sam discussed post 1’s membership by the numbers.
The Details: After the opening prayer, we went right into Post officer introductions, after which our guests took turns introducing themselves as well. After this, we swung right into the Announcements portion of the Open House:
Our Post 1 membership meetings are the first Saturday of every month-12:00 at the post. We also send out a Zoom link via e-mail for members who are not able to attend in person.
Veterans Day Dinner, 5-8pm November 11th at the Post. Free dinner for Veterans, $15 for guests.
Post 1 Open Houses are monthly on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, however we will not be having Open Houses in November or December due to other activities.
5th District VA Hospital Visits are the 1st Saturday of every month. Meet at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center Auditorium at 1:45pm. Wear your Legion cap or something Legion Family related. No need to register, just show up!
The Ruck March to Benefit the VA Food Pantry is the 3rd Sunday of every month. Meet at 10:30 at the Tipsy Steer, 5000 Hiawatha Ave. The route is 1.2 miles and pretty straight. It’s a fun and easy way to contribute, and also allows members wo get to know Legionnaires from other Posts and Districts.
Post 1/Eagles Christmas Party December 12 here at the Post. This is currently in the planning process, so stay tuned for further updates.
Partnership With the Gopher Gunners First Vice Chris Sam announced that Post 1 had been invited by the 151st Field Artillery Regiment of the Minnesota National Guard to participate in the 100 year rededication of the Mendota Bridge. This is significant in Post 1’s history as our namesake, Theodor Peterson was a member of the 151st Field Artillery Regiment when he was killed in France in 1919. It's also significant in the 151st’s history, as the bridge was dedicated to those members of the 151st who were killed in World War I. We are very excited for this partnership and are looking forward to a prosperous and rewarding relationship with the Gopher Gunners. The event is being planned by the 151st and details are still in the works, but for now mark your calendars for the morning of November 9th from 9am-12pm for the rededication ceremony. Post 1 will be presenting our American Legion Family colors, and we would love to have a massive showing from Post 1 members and supporters. More to come.
1st Vice Chris then discussed some Post 1 membership numbers, to include a rough breakdown of our Veteran population. As of 10/21/26 Post 1 is roughly:
33.75% Vietnam Era Veterans
7.36% Korean War Era Veterans
9.58% Lebanon/Grenada Era Veterans
3.06 % Panama Era Veterans
11.65% Persian Gulf Era Veterans
7.93% Global War on Terrorism Era Veterans
*On a sad note, we lost our last WWII Era Veteran last year.
Next up was the drawing for the $25 gas card and $50 Aldi card. New member Adam H. drew the names, and Cindy Y was the winner of the gas card and Cari M. won the Aldi card. We then went right into the “social hour” of the night, where attendees get together and chat with other attendees. Lots of introductions and connections were made, as we had a diverse and interesting group.
Sadly, the night ended about 6:45pm.
